Trauma Counseling
Trauma is the emotional response caused by an intensely negative experience. No two people will see the same situation in exactly the same way but it is our perception of the event which causes the trauma. It causes a wide range of symptoms including anger, anxiety and depression. Some examples of events that can cause trauma are:
Being in an Accident
Domestic Violence (either as a witness or victim)
A natural disaster
Severe Illness
The Death of a Loved One
Sexual Assault
Abuse (Physical, Sexual, Verbal)
Divorce
Traumatic Birth
Witnessing Violence
Childhood Neglect
One of the most effective methods of treating trauma is through EMDR, which can be administered both in person and via Telehealth.
"Traumatized people chronically feel unsafe inside their bodies: The past is alive in the form of gnawing interior discomfort. Their bodies are constantly bombarded by visceral warning signs, and, in an attempt to control these processes, they often become expert at ignoring their gut feelings and in numbing awareness of what is played out inside. They learn to hide from their selves.”
